More than half of the United States has legalized some form of medical marijuana with the other half considering a series of bills to take on the same initiative. Many people across the United States are using marijuana but there is only been FDA approval for cannabis-based treatments in severe epilepsy.

Understanding why more research hasn’t been done and why researchers are not working to introduce more products for FDA approval can be important. Changes to medical marijuana may not occur anytime soon. The DEA even lobbied for the idea of reclassifying marijuana as a schedule 2 drug like oxycodone for its pain reducing effects.

For now, medical marijuana can be used to treat a number of conditions even though medical marijuana products have only received FDA approval for treating two severe forms of epilepsy. Here are the main conditions that can be treated with medical marijuana:

Mental health conditions: conditions like schizophrenia or posttraumatic stress disorder can be managed with ongoing medical marijuana use. People with PTSD to experience improvements to sleep and a reduction in anxiety over time with medical marijuana use.

Multiple sclerosis and conditions that cause ongoing muscle spasms can also see benefits from medical marijuana use. Individuals that regularly experience tremors have also seen improvements with medical marijuana use.

Medical marijuana can also be beneficial in treating the symptoms of cancer and reducing pain throughout recovery as well as assisting with appetite loss  throughout treatment.

Individuals with eating disorders like anorexia can also see benefits from marijuana use as it can help to manage appetite and digestion.

Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of medical marijuana comes with its pain relief. Many people are using medical marijuana as a means to treat chronic conditions of pain as it can be considered even more effective than most opiates.

As medical marijuana reform continues to change throughout the United States, we will see even more treatments considered for medical marijuana users.
